Dying Trees

The summers here have been hot. I often walk around my neighborhood and take photos of all the dying trees. This my “Dead Tree Project” which I started in 2023 when I started documenting the effects on local vegetation after 54 days above 115F (46.1C) degrees this summer in Phoenix, Arizona. Dystopian bus stop. ThisContinue reading “Dying Trees”

The Retreating Glacier

Photos from my retro photo album titled: Alaska, May 2013 Mendenhall Glacier started retreating in the mid-1700s following a period of glaciation that began 3,000 years ago. But in recent decades, Alaska has been warming twice as fast as the rest of the United States, helping to push the region’s glaciers into an especially steep decline.Continue reading “The Retreating Glacier”

Welcome to the New Normal

As I write this, there have been 133 days this year when the high temperature reached at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7C) in Phoenix, Arizona. It last reached at least 100° F on October 21, 2023, which is fairly late in the year for such a temperature to be achieved. In 2020, Phoenix that number was a whopping 144 days over 100Continue reading “Welcome to the New Normal”

The Simple Life

The idea of living a simple life intrigues me. With the future looking rather grim, I’ve started to think about ways to live more simply. The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t going to end anytime soon, so I’ve started to think of simple ways to maintain my existence. So, what is a simple life? By my ownContinue reading “The Simple Life”

Aridification

Definition: The gradual change of a region from a wetter to a drier climate. The American West is drying out. I live in one of the states where this is a concern, but most people I know aren’t talking about it. It’s almost as though people don’t want to know that water is depleting. As longContinue reading “Aridification”

Scared of Summer

WILDFIRES IN THE AMERICAN WEST The above photo is an image of a burned cholla cactus. I took this photo after the Sears fire ripped through its habitat in September 2020. The Sears Fire burned through nearly 14,500 acres (22.65 sq miles) over the course of a week. It’s hard for me to conceptualize whatContinue reading “Scared of Summer”

Cool Cacti

The world is heating up, so now is a good time to become familiar with the wonderful world of cacti! Living in the American Southwest has made me appreciate the tenacity of these amazing plants and has led me to learn more about them. I amassed a small online collection of favorite specimens that IContinue reading “Cool Cacti”

Water, Or The Lack Thereof

Above is a photo that I took of Hoover Dam in January 2020. The water level was precariously low then, and it’s even lower now. About 25 million people depend on the water provided by America’s largest reservoir, but a prolonged drought is slowly sucking the life out of a sustainable future. Living in theContinue reading “Water, Or The Lack Thereof”

Reality Check

That pictured above is, or I should say, was, a saguaro. Everywhere I look, the saguaros are dying. A healthy saguaro is supposed to look like this: An unhealthy saguaro looks like this: Both photos were taken around Phoenix, Arizona. The healthy cactus image was captured in 2016. The unhealthy one was pictured last year.Continue reading “Reality Check”
