Vulture Mine

Photos from my retro photo album titled: Vulture Gold Mine, Feb 2008. The Vulture Mine outside of Wickenburg, Arizona was the most productive gold mine in Arizona history. From 1863 to 1942 the mine produced 340,000 ounces (9,638.8 kgs) of gold and 260,000 ounces (7,370.9 kgs) of silver. I’m having a hard time visualizing what those valuesContinue reading “Vulture Mine”

Jerome, AZ

Photos from my retro photo album titled: Jerome, October 2007. Jerome, Arizona, is a captivating place, a photographer’s playground. Abandoned homes cling to the hills, and staircases lead to nowhere. Copper put Jerome on the map, and the removal of that copper wiped Jerome off it. Pictured is a former bank, or maybe it was aContinue reading “Jerome, AZ”

Saint Elmo, Colorado

Photos from my retro photo album titled: Colorado, August 2007. Founded in 1880, Saint Elmo sits at an elevation of 9,961 feet (3,036 m). Nearly 2,000 people settled in this town when mining for gold and silver started. The mining industry started to decline in the early 1920s, and in 1922 the railroad discontinued service. ItContinue reading “Saint Elmo, Colorado”

Colorado Ghosts

Photos from my retro photo album titled: Colorado, August 2007. How many ghost towns do you think Colorado has? If you guessed over 1,500, you’d be correct! One of my favorite ones is Stumptown outside of Leadville, Co. Stumptown. What a romantic name. Ghost towns appeal to my sensibilities because I like what they represent: theyContinue reading “Colorado Ghosts”

Somewhere in Colorado

Photos from my retro photo album titled: Colorado, August 2007. I remember taking these photos. I was alone driving Colorado’s back roads from nowhere to somewhere. I don’t know who lived in these houses, but ghosts live in them now. Today, only wind knocks on their abandoned doors. In modern cities, air is something one breathes,Continue reading “Somewhere in Colorado”

Goldfield, AZ

This video makes the place look super cheesy, which it is, but it’s admittedly a really a fun place to visit: There’s genuine history to be found here, and the photo opportunities are endless. Photos from this month’s retro photo album titled: Goldfield Feb 14, 2007—back when I went through a heavy sepia phase. I’m notContinue reading “Goldfield, AZ”

Goldfield Ghost Town

This month’s retro photo album is titled: Goldfield Feb 14, 2007.  Located at the foot of the Superstition Mountains, Goldfield was a boom-and-bust town built on the riches of the Mammoth Mine. The gold vein soon played out, and the city lasted only five years, from 1893 to 1898. The buildings standing there today are allContinue reading “Goldfield Ghost Town”
