The Nonfictionado

I’m excited to introduce a new concept here: non-fiction book reviews! Yes, non-fiction! Woo-hoo! However, these won’t be your typical book reviews. Instead of just discussing the content of the books, I’ll also explore how they relate to everyday life. Well, that’s the plan, at least. So, without further ado, allow me to introduce the inaugural book!

Poets Square by Courtney Gustafson

This is a true story about a couple who rented a house surrounded by thirty stray cats. It is a tale of discovery and rescue, not only of herself but also of all the struggling felines.

Poets Square follows Courtney as her temporary, surreal living situation gradually reshapes her life. The cats, many of which are sick, feral, starving, and wary, become impossible to ignore. As Courtney feeds, traps, and names the cats, she grapples with the emotional toll of inevitable losses and the constant fear of not doing enough, testing her relationships and finances along the way.

Interwoven with this rescue narrative is Gustafson’s own journey through grief and trauma, with the cats reflecting her struggles with care, responsibility, and control. The house at Poets Square serves as both a sanctuary and a pressure cooker, highlighting that love is expressed through sacrifice and attention rather than sentimentality. Ultimately, the book is a profound meditation on staying present in suffering and illustrating how small acts of devotion can provide grounding in an otherwise unmoored life.

When I picked up this book, I was in the midst of caring for a stray cat and her kittens that had unexpectedly shown up in my yard. Her story resonated with me and guided me through my personal journey. She taught me the significance of TNR (trap, neuter, release) and the importance of finding forever homes for the kittens. I’m happy to report that I was able to rehome all five of her kittens, including the shy and skittish one, but I have so far been unsuccessful in trapping momma and getting her spayed.

Fast forward five months, and the momma cat is pregnant again. She doesn’t hiss at me as much anymore and has started allowing me to pet her. Courtney taught me that cats require patience, and her words have guided my efforts. I’m determined to help this momma cat because she deserves a better life, away from the dangers of the streets. My heart aches to bring her indoors, where she would be safe, warm, and cared for, but unfortunately, my allergies prevent me from having her as a permanent companion. Still, I won’t give up on her. I continue to provide her with food, water, and gentle words, hoping that one day she’ll trust me enough to take that step into a more secure life.

My books Memory Road Trip (e-bookpaperback) and Time Traveled (e-bookpaperback) are both available! You can also find them at most major international book sites.
