Here’s another installment from my Tucson Festival of Books series.
This lecture was about how misinformation and disinformation are hardly new tools for American politicians. These three authors (Clay Risen, David Rohde, and Michael Tackett) shared tales about three master manipulators: Joseph McCarthy, Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell.
Overall, this was a very insightful discussion. Instead of summarizing it, I encourage readers to watch the full conversation here.
Several essential insights emerge from the current political landscape, particularly highlighting Trump’s unabashed approach to wielding the powers of the Department of Justice as a strategic weapon. He navigates this treacherous terrain with a remarkable lack of concern for the political fallout, using the FBI and DOJ as instruments in his relentless battle against adversaries.
A lot of mention was made about the speech Trump gave on March 14:
To him, each day resembles the production of a high-stakes television show, complete with drama, suspense, and an audience that hangs on every tweet.
Moreover, the chilling reality of today’s environment is that it deters many from seeking careers in public service. The fear of making decisions that could end their careers—especially when it comes to handling sensitive matters like classified documents—casts a long shadow over those considering a life dedicated to public duty.
My books Memory Road Trip (e-book or paperback) and Time Traveled (e-book or paperback) are both available! You can also find them at most major international book sites.
