I used to have to go back home to Wisconsin a lot to visit my ailing mother. Most of the time, I just stayed in Milwaukee, but sometimes I would take a little road trip to clear out my head. Here is a random selection of images that reads like memories.

Bleeding Hearts always remind me of my mother. She would grow these in her backyard next to a pile of ferns.

Wisconsin’s Capitol building in Madison. The overcast sky is typical for this state. Many of my memories are covered in grey.

This could be anywhere in Wisconsin. Every town has bars that look exactly like this.

Again, this could be anywhere in the state, too. I think I snapped this photo in downtown Milwaukee. It has oodles of dilapidated old buildings worthy of restoration.

A classic old rotting barn. Wisconsin used to have a lot of these, but they are gradually getting torn down.

Galena, Illinois. I found it to be an attractive historic town full of Victorian structures.

Another view of Galena, hometown of Ulysses S. Grant. I haven’t gotten around to reading his memoir yet, but it’s on my “to read” list.
