Monterey and Santa Cruz, CA

“[Cannery Row’s] inhabitants are, as the man once said, ‘whores, pimps, gamblers, and sons of bitches,’ by which he meant everybody. Had the man looked through another peephole he might have said, ‘saints and angels and martyrs and holy men,’ and he would have meant the same thing.”
― John Steinbeck, Cannery Row

Walking Cannery Row today, you’d be hard pressed to find whores, pimps, gamblers, saints, angels, martyrs, or holy men. However, you’ll easily find sons of bitches and everybody, for that place is crawling with tourists.

While in the area, we attended opening day at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, home of the Giant Dipper, one of America’s oldest wooden roller coasters.

I remember watching some daredevil climb up a ladder, light himself on fire, and jump into a tiny pool.

We also found some time to pop over to The Mystery Spot, where gravity doesn’t necessarily apply. For proof, here’s a picture of me leaning into the void:

My books Memory Road Trip (e-book or paperback) and Time Traveled (e-book or paperback) are both available! You can also find them at most major international book sites.
