Cycladic Statues

Images from this month’s retro photo album titled: Malibu Nov 7, 2006.

This statue of a head dates from 3300 to 1100 BCE. I’m drawn to the simplicity of the figure predating modern art by thousands of years.

The best-known type of artwork is the full-length female figure with arms folded across the front. Apart from a sharply defined nose, the faces are a smooth blank, although there is evidence on some that they were originally painted.

Here is a little poem I wrote in ode to these figurines:

Neolithic Art
Ancient
you are way beyond
my understanding.
Who were you people?
Ten thousand years ago?
So far removed
from the time
that I know.
Still a human
We are the same.
Only distance
separates us.
But a vast chasm
that distance is.
